I went to see one of my coworkers do stand up comedy tonight. I was mortified for him — but he actually did well and the crowd seemed to enjoy his set. Phew! And if you’re looking for a comedy club in NYC, I have to say Comix on 14th Street and 9th Avenue has very clean bathrooms and Hoegaarden on tap, two big plusses if you ask me.

Anyway get ready for an early version of your favorite —

Single of the Week

Here’s Ken:

With next week’s inauguration, it’s hard not to think about the growing acceptance of expanding government social services, bridging New Deal paternalism with modern day Democratic progressivism. In this spirit, we’re going back across the Atlantic to the land of socialized everything. Your musical envoy this week is Glasvegas, a group of Scots who blend 50s doo-wop with 90s alt rock. Their song is “Geraldine,” which covers the highs – a beatific social worker – and the lows – wayward prescription taking – of state-sponsored guardianship.

(I tried to embed the clip here, but apparently Glasvegas doesn’t like embedding (boo!) so to watch it, click here.)

Golden Slumber

Did anyone else feel as empty as I did after watching the Golden Globes last night? I mean, maybe it’s all that’s going on in the world, but I was like, who cares?! I was happy Mad Men won, and 30 Rock, but Angelina Jolie lounging in Brad Pitt’s lap with her look of “I’m so over it” and Kate Winslet’s over-the-top faux shock and Leo tearing up and Darren Aronofsky giving Mickey Rourke the finger and Salma Hayek’s crazy cleavage — it was all too much and not enough. I guess Stephen Spielberg gave it a little gravitas, but it’s no Kennedy Center Honors. On to the Oscars. (Yawn.)

Hail to the Misunderestimated

I’m not sure how many of you caught George Bush’s final press conference this morning, but I was waiting for the painter and caught the beginning. First question out of the gate, the Yale grad (cough) is telling the press that at times they “misunderestimated” him. I’m sitting on my chaise in my morning haze thinking, “That is not a word.” So I google it to make sure I’m not crazy, and not only is it not a word, but the Prez has been using this made up word since 2003. Genius.

Don’t let the door hit you on your way out, sir.

Mickey Rourke filled his role in The Wrestler really well… maybe too well
